it came to do so察little as the magnificent Olaf deigned to think of it at the

moment。

One of the last scuffles I remember of Olaf's having with his refractory

heathens察 was at a Thing in Hordaland or Rogaland察 far in the North察

where      the   chief   opposition      hero    was    one   Jaernskaegg       ─ironbeard;

Scottice ─Airn´shag察─as it were。。 Here again was a grand heathen temple察

Hakon Jarl's building察with a splendid Thor in it and much idol furniture。

The king stated what was his constant wish here as elsewhere察but had no

sooner entered upon the subject of Christianity than universal murmur察

rising into clangor and violent dissent察interrupted him察and Ironbeard took

up the discourse in reply。 Ironbeard did not break down察on the contrary察

he察with great brevity察emphasis察and clearness察signified ;that the proposal

to reject their old gods was in the highest degree unacceptable to this

Thing察that it was contrary to bargain察withal察so that if it were insisted on察

they would have to fight with the king about it察and in fact were now ready

to do so。; In reply to this察 Olaf察 without word uttered察 but merely with

temple close at hand察burst into it察shutting the door behind him察smashed

Thor and Co。 to destruction察 then reappearing victorious察 found much

confusion outside察and察in particular察what was a most important item察the

rugged Ironbeard done to death by Olaf's men in the interim。 Which

entirely disheartened the Thing from fighting at that moment察having now

no leader who dared to head them in so dangerous an enterprise。 So that

every one departed to digest his rage in silence as he could。

Matters having cooled for a week or two察there was another Thing held察

in which King Olaf testified regret for the quarrel that had fallen out察

readiness to pay what _mulct_ was due by law for that unlucky homicide

of Ironbeard by his people察 and察 withal察 to take the fair daughter of

Ironbeard to wife察 if all would comply and be friends with him in other

baptism察we察marry Jaernskaegg's daughter察you。 This bargain held on both

sides。 The wedding察too察was celebrated察but that took rather a strange turn。

On the morning of the bride´night察 Olaf察 who had not been sleeping察

astonishment察 the fair partner aiming a long knife ready to strike home

Olaf into the apartment of his servants察 mentioning there what had

happened察and forbidding any of them to follow her。

Olaf Tryggveson察though his kingdom was the smallest of the Norse

Three察had risen to a renown over all the Norse world察which neither he of

Denmark nor he of Sweden could pretend to rival。 A magnificent察 far´

shining man察more expert in all ;bodily exercises; as the Norse call them察

him察as a wild bit of real heroism察in such rude guise and environment察a

high察true察and great human soul。 A jovial burst of laughter in him察withal察

obeyed察by one class out of zeal and love察by the rest out of dread。; His

glorious course察however察was not to last long。

King Svein of the Double´Beard had not yet completed his conquest of

Englandby no means yet察some thirteen horrid years of that still before

himwhen察over in Denmark察he found that complaints against him and

intricacies had arisen察on the part principally of one Burislav察King of the

Wends far up the Baltic察and in a less degree with the King of Sweden

and other minor individuals。 Svein earnestly applied himself to settle these察

and have his hands free。 Burislav察 an aged heathen gentleman察 proved

reasonable and conciliatory察 so察 too察 the King of Sweden察 and Dowager

Queen Sigrid察his managing mother。 Bargain in both these cases got sealed

and crowned by marriage。 Svein察who had become a widower lately察now

wedded Sigrid察 and might think察 possibly enough察 he had got a proud

bargain察 though a heathen one。 Burislav also insisted on marriage with

Princess Thyri察the Double´Beard's sister。 Thyri察inexpressibly disinclined

to wed an aged heathen of that stamp察pleaded hard with her brother察but

the Double´Bearded was inexorable察Thyri's wailings and entreaties went

for nothing。 With some guardian foster´brother察and a serving´maid or two察

she had to go on this hated journey。 Old Burislav察at sight of her察blazed

out into marriage´feast of supreme magnificence察and was charmed to see

her察but Thyri would not join the marriage party察refused to eat with it or

sit with it at all。 Day after day察 for six days察 flatly refused察 and after

nightfall of the sixth察 glided out with her foster´brother into the woods察

into by´paths and inconceivable wanderings察 and察 in effect察 got home to

Denmark。 Brother Svein was not for the moment there察probably enough

gone to England again。 But Thyri knew too well he would not allow her to

stay here察or anywhere that he could help察except with the old heathen she

had just fled from。

Thyri察looking round the world察saw no likely road for her察but to Olaf
