have been a thoughtful察 prudent woman察 though always with a fierce

royalism at the bottom of her memory察and a secret implacability on that

head。

At the age of twelve Olaf went to sea察furnished with a little fleet察and

skilful sea´counsellor察expert old Rane察by his Foster´father察and set out to

push his fortune in the world。 Rane was a steersman and counsellor in

these incipient times察but the crew always called Olaf ;King察─though at

first察 as Snorro thinks察 except it were in the hour of battle察 he merely

pulled an oar。 He cruised and fought in this capacity on many seas and

shores察passed several years察perhaps till the age of nineteen or twenty察in

this wild element and way of life察 fighting always in a glorious and

distinguished manner。 In the hour of battle察 diligent enough ;to amass

property察─ as the Vikings termed it察 and in the long days and nights of

sailing察given over察it is likely察to his own thoughts and the unfathomable

dialogue with the ever´moaning Sea察 not the worst High School a man

could have察 and indeed infinitely preferable to the most that are going

even now察for a high and deep young soul。

His first distinguished expedition was to Sweden此natural to go thither

handsome battle for himself察in entering Maelare Lake察and in getting out

of it again察 after being frozen there all winter察 showing still more

surprising察almost miraculous contrivance and dexterity。 This was the first

of his glorious victories察of which the Skalds reckon up some fourteen or

thirteen very glorious indeed察 mostly in the Western and Southern

countries察most of all in England察till the name of Olaf Haraldson became

quite famous in the Viking and strategic world。 He seems really to have

learned the secrets of his trade察and to have been察then and afterwards察for

vigilance察 contrivance察 valor察 and promptitude of execution察 a superior

fighter。 Several exploits recorded of him betoken察in simple forms察what

may be called a military genius。

The principal察and to us the alone interesting察of his exploits seem to

have lain in England察 and察 what is further notable察 always on the anti´

Svein side。 English books do not mention him at all that I can find察but it

is fairly credible that察as the Norse records report察in the end of Ethelred's

reign察he was the ally or hired general of Ethelred察and did a great deal of

sea´fighting察 watching察 sailing察 and sieging for this miserable king and

Edmund Ironside察his son。 Snorro says expressly察London察the impregnable

city察 had to be besieged again for Ethelred's behoof in the interval

between Svein's death and young Knut's getting back from Denmark察and

that our Olaf Haraldson was the great engineer and victorious captor of

London on that singular occasionLondon captured for the first time。 The

Bridge察 as usual察 Snorro says察 offered almost insuperable obstacles。 But

the engineering genius of Olaf contrived huge ;platforms of wainscoting

old walls of wooden houses察in factВ察bound together by withes察─these察

carried steadily aloft above the ships察 will thinks Olaf considerably

secure them and us from the destructive missiles察big boulder stones察and

other察 mischief profusely showered down on us察 till we get under the

Bridge with axes and cables察and do some good upon it。 Olaf's plan was

tried察 most of the other ships察 in spite of their wainscoting and withes察

recoiled on reaching the Bridge察so destructive were the boulder and other

missile showers。 But Olaf's ships and self got actually under the Bridge察

fixed all manner of cables there察and then察with the river current in their

favor察 and the frightened ships rallying to help in this safer part of the

enterprise察tore out the important piles and props察and fairly broke the poor

Bridge察wholly or partly察down into the river察and its Danish defenders into

immediate surrender。 That is Snorro's account。

On a previous occasion察Olaf had been deep in a hopeful combination

with Ethelred's two younger sons察 Alfred and Edward察 afterwards King

Edward the Confessor此That they two should sally out from Normandy in

strong force察 unite with Olaf in ditto察 and察 landing on the Thames察 do

something effectual for themselves。 But impediments察bad weather or the

like察disheartened the poor Princes察and it came to nothing。 Olaf was much

in Normandy察what they then called Walland察a man held in honor by those

Norman Dukes。

What amount of ;property; he had amassed I do not know察but could

prove察 were it necessary察 that he had acquired some tactical or even

strategic faculty and real talent for war。 At Lymfjord察in Jutland察but some

him instantly running。 But of this more particularly by and by。

What still more surprises me is the mystery察 where Olaf察 in this

wandering察fighting察sea´roving life察acquired his deeply religious feeling察

his intense adherence to the Christian Faith。 I suppose it had been in

England察 where many pious persons察 priestly and other察 were still to be
