of them I think was Harald Mund Harald of the _Wry´Mouth_察who gave
rise to two Impostors察pretending to be Sons of his察a good while after the
poor Wry´Mouth itself and all its troublesome belongings were quietly
underground。 What Norway suffered during that sad century may be
imagined。

CHAPTER XIV。
SVERRIR AND DESCENDANTS察TO HAKON THE OLD。
The end of it was察or rather the first abatement察and _beginnings_ of
the end察That察 when all this had gone on ever worsening for some forty
years or so察one Sverrir A。D。 1177察at the head of an armed mob of poor
people called _Birkebeins_察came upon the scene。 A strange enough figure
in History察 this Sverrir and his Birkebeins At first a mere mockery and
dismal laughing´stock to the enlightened Norway public。 Nevertheless by
unheard´of fighting察hungering察exertion察and endurance察Sverrir察after ten
years of such a death´wrestle against men and things察got himself accepted
as King察 and by wonderful expenditure of ingenuity察 common cunning察
unctuous Parliamentary Eloquence or almost Popular Preaching察 and it
must be owned general human faculty and valor or value in the over´
clouded and distorted state察did victoriously continue such。 And founded a
new Dynasty in Norway察 which ended only with Norway's separate
existence察after near three hundred years。
This Sverrir called himself a Son of Harald Wry´Mouth察 but was in
reality the son of a poor Comb´maker in some little town of Norway察
nothing heard of Sonship to Wry´Mouth till after good success otherwise。
His Birkebeins that is to say察 _Birchlegs_ the poor rebellious wretches
having taken to the woods察 and been obliged察 besides their intolerable
scarcity of food察 to thatch their bodies from the cold with whatever
covering could be got察 and their legs especially with birch bark察 sad
species of fleecy hosiery察whence their nicknamehis Birkebeins I guess
always to have been a kind of Norse _Jacquerie_此 desperate rising of
thralls and indigent people察 driven mad by their unendurable sufferings
and famishingstheirs the _deepest_ stratum of misery察 and the densest
and heaviest察 in this the general misery of Norway察 which had lasted
towards the third generation and looked as if it would last forever此
whereupon they had risen proclaiming察 in this furious dumb manner察
unintelligible except to Heaven察that the same could not察nor would not察be

endured any longer And察by their Sverrir察strange to say察they did attain a
kind of permanent success察 and察 from being a dismal laughing´stock in
Norway察 came to be important察 and for a time all´important there。 Their
opposition nicknames察 _Baglers_ from Bagall察_baculus_察bishop's staff察
Bishop Nicholas being chief Leader察─ _Gold´legs_察─and the like obscure
terms for there was still a considerable course of counter´fighting ahead察
and especially of counter´nicknaming察 I take to have meant in Norse
prefigurement seven centuries ago察 bloated Aristocracy察─ tyrannous´
_Bourgeoisie_察till察in the next century察these rents were closed again
King Sverrir察not himself bred to comb´making察had察in his fifth year察
gone to an uncle察Bishop in the Faroe Islands察and got some considerable
education from him察with a view to Priesthood on the part of Sverrir。 But察
not liking that career察Sverrir had fled and smuggled himself over to the
Birkebeins察 who察 noticing the learned tongue察 and other miraculous
qualities of the man察 proposed to make him Captain of them察 and even
threatened to kill him if he would not acceptwhich thus at the sword's
point察 as Sverrir says察 he was obliged to do。 It was after this that he
thought of becoming son of Wry´Mouth and other higher things。
His Birkebeins and he had certainly a talent of campaigning which has
hardly ever been equalled。 They fought like devils against any odds of
number察 and before battle they have been known to march six days
together without food察 except察 perhaps察 the inner barks of trees察 and in
such clothing and shoeing as mere birch barkat one time察somewhere in
the Dovrefjeld察there was serious counsel held among them whether they
should not all察as one man察leap down into the frozen gulfs and precipices察
or at once massacre one another wholly察and so finish。 Of their conduct in
battle察 fiercer than that of _Baresarks_察 where was there ever seen the
parallel拭In truth they are a dim strange object to one察in that black time察
wondrously bringing light into it withal察 and proved to be察 under such
unexpected circumstances察the beginning of better days
Of Sverrir's public speeches there still exist authentic specimens察
wonderful indeed察 and much characteristic of such a Sverrir。 A comb´
maker King察 evidently meaning several good and solid things察 and
effecting them too察 athwart such an element of Norwegian chaos´come´
