LADY TOUCHWOOD察LORD TOUCHWOOD察MELLEFONT。
LORD TOUCH。 Hell and amazement察she's in tears。
LADY TOUCH。 Kneeling。А Eternal blessings thank you。Ha my
lord listening O fortune has o'erpaid me all察all all's my own 。Aside。А
MEL。 Nay察I beseech you rise。
LADY TOUCH。 Aloud。А Never察 never I'll grow to the ground察
be buried quick beneath it察 e'er I'll be consenting to so damned a sin as
incest unnatural incest
MEL。 Ha
LADY TOUCH。 O cruel man察will you not let me go拭 I'll forgive
all that's past。 O heaven察you will not ravish me拭
MEL。 Damnation
LORD TOUCH。 Monster察dog your life shall answer this 。Draws
and runs at MELLEFONT察is held by LADY TOUCHWOOD。А
LADY TOUCH。 O heavens察 my lord Hold察 hold察 for heaven's
sake。
MEL。 Confusion察my uncle O the damned sorceress。
LADY TOUCH。 Moderate your rage察 good my lord He's mad察
alas察he's mad。 Indeed he is察my lord察and knows not what he does。 See
how wild he looks。
MEL。 By heaven察 'twere senseless not to be mad察 and see such
witchcraft。
LADY TOUCH。 My lord察you hear him察he talks idly。
LORD TOUCH。 Hence from my sight察 thou living infamy to my
name察 when next I see that face察 I'll write villain in't with my sword's
point。
MEL。 Now察 by my soul察 I will not go till I have made known my
wrongs。 Nay察 till I have made known yours察 which察 if possible察 are

LADY TOUCH。 Alas察he raves Talks very poetry For heaven's

some himself。
MEL。 Death and furies察will you not hear meWhy by heaven she
laughs察 grins察 points to your back察 she forks out cuckoldom with her
fingers察and you're running horn´mad after your fortune。 As she is going
she turns back and smiles at him。А
LORD TOUCH。 I fear he's mad indeed。Let's send Maskwell to
him。
MEL。 Send him to her。
LADY TOUCH。 Come察 come察 good my lord察 my heart aches so察 I
shall faint if I stay。
SCENE XXI。
MELLEFONT alone。
MEL。 Oh察 I could curse my stars察 fate察 and chance察 all causes and
accidents of fortune in this life But to what purpose拭 Yet察'sdeath察for
a man to have the fruit of all his industry grow full and ripe察ready to drop
into his mouth察and just when he holds out his hand to gather it察to have a
sudden whirlwind come察tear up tree and all察and bear away the very root
and foundation of his hopes此 what temper can contain拭 They talk of
sending Maskwell to me察I never had more need of him。 But what can he
do拭 Imagination cannot form a fairer and more plausible design than this
of his which has miscarried。 O my precious aunt察 I shall never thrive
without I deal with the devil察or another woman。
Women察like flames察have a destroying power察Ne'er to be quenched察
till they themselves devour。

THE DOUBLE´DEALERA COMEDY
ACT V。
SCENE I。
LADY TOUCHWOOD and MASKWELL。
LADY TOUCH。 Was't not lucky拭
MASK。 Lucky Fortune is your own察and 'tis her interest so to be。
By heaven I believe you can control her power察and she fears it此though
chance brought my lord察'twas your own art that turned it to advantage。
LADY TOUCH。 'Tis true it might have been my ruin。 But yonder's
my lord。 I believe he's coming to find you此 I'll not be seen。
SCENE II。
MASKWELL alone。
MASK。 So察 I durst not own my introducing my lord察 though it
succeeded well for her察 for she would have suspected a design which I
should have been puzzled to excuse。 My lord is thoughtful。 I'll be so
too察yet he shall know my thoughts此 or think he does。
SCENE III。
To himАLORD TOUCHWOOD。
MASK。 What have I done拭
LORD TOUCH。 Talking to himself
MASK。 'Twas honestand shall I be rewarded for it拭No察 'twas
honest察therefore I shan't。 Nay察rather therefore I ought not察for it rewards
itself。
LORD TOUCH。 Unequalled virtue 。Aside。А
MASK。 But should it be known察then I have lost a friend He was
an ill man察and I have gained察for half myself I lent him察and that I have

recalled此 so I have served myself察and what is yet better察I have served a
worthy lord to whom I owe myself。
LORD TOUCH。 Excellent man 。Aside。А
MASK。 Yet I am wretched。 Oh察there is a secret burns within this
breast察 which察 should it once blaze forth察 would ruin all察 consume my
honest character察and brand me with the name of villain。
LORD TOUCH。 Ha
MASK。 Why do I love Yet heaven and my waking conscience are
my witnesses察 I never gave one working thought a vent察 which might
discover that I loved察nor ever must。 No察let it prey upon my heart察for I
would rather die察than seem once察barely seem察dishonest。 Oh察should it
once be known I love fair Cynthia察all this that I have done would look
like rival's malice察false friendship to my lord察and base self´interest。 Let
me perish first察and from this hour avoid all sight and speech察and察if I can察
all thought of that pernicious beauty。 Ha But what is my distraction
doing拭 I am wildly talking to myself察 and some ill chance might have
directed malicious ears this way。 Seems to start察seeing my lord。А
LORD TOUCH。 Start not察let guilty and dishonest souls start at the
revelation of their thoughts察but be thou fixed察as is thy virtue。
MASK。 I am confounded察and beg your Lordship's pardon for those
free discourses which I have had w
