against a heap of spittoons in one corner察 plunging into which察
head foremost察 with a tremendous crash察 he lay at full length
among the ruins察 stunned and motionless。 Then察 without waiting
to receive the compliments of the bystanders on the victory be had
won察he retreated to his own bedchamber察and considering himself
in a state of siege察piled all the portable furniture against the door
by way of barricade。
`I have done it now察 said Joe察as he sat down upon his bedstead
and wiped his heated face。 `I knew it would come at last。 The
Maypole and I must part company。 I¨m a roving vagabond!she

Chapter 31
ondering on his unhappy lot察 Joe sat and listened for a
long time察expecting every moment to hear their creaking
Pfootsteps on the stairs察 or to be greeted by his worthy
father with a summons to capitulate unconditionally察 and deliver
himself up straightway。 But neither voice nor footstep came察and
though some distant echoes察 as of closing doors and people
hurrying in and out of rooms察 resounding from time to time
through the great passages察 and penetrating to his remote
seclusion察gave note of unusual commotion downstairs察no nearer
sound disturbed his place of retreat察which seemed the quieter for
these far´off noises察 and was as dull and full of gloom as any
hermit¨s cell。
It came on darker and darker。 The old´fashioned furniture of
the chamber察 which was a kind of hospital for all the invalided
movables in the house察 grew indistinct and shadowy in its many
shapes察chairs and tables察which by day were as honest cripples as
need be察 assumed a doubtful and mysterious character察 and one
old leprous screen of faded India leather and gold binding察which
had kept out many a cold breath of air in days of yore and shut in
many a jolly face察frowned on him with a spectral aspect察and stood
at full height in its allotted corner察 like some gaunt ghost who
waited to be questioned。 A portrait opposite the window!a queer察
old grey´eyed general察in an oval frame!seemed to wink and doze
as the light decayed察and at length察when the last faint glimmering
speck of day went out察 to shut its eyes in good earnest察 and fall
sound asleep。 There was such a hush and mystery about
everything察that Joe could not help following its example察 and so

went off into a slumber likewise察 and dreamed of Dolly察 till the
clock of Chigwell church struck two。
Still nobody came。 The distant noises in the house had ceased察
and out of doors all was quiet察save for the occasional barking of
some deep´mouthed dog察and the shaking of the branches by the
night wind。 He gazed mournfully out of window at each well´
known object as it lay sleeping in the dim light of the moon察and
creeping back to his former seat察 thought about the late uproar察
until察 with long thinking of察 it seemed to have occurred a month
ago。 Thus察 between dozing察 and thinking察 and walking to the
window and looking out察the night wore away察the grim old screen察
and the kindred chairs and tables察 began slowly to reveal
themselves in their accustomed forms察 the grey´eyed general
seemed to wink and yawn and rouse himself察 and at last he was
broad awake again察and very uncomfortable and cold and haggard
he looked察in the dull grey light of morning。
The sun had begun to peep above the forest trees察and already
flung across the curling mist bright bars of gold察 when Joe
dropped from his window on the ground below察a little bundle and
his trusty stick察and prepared to descend himself。
It was not a very difficult task察 for there were so many
projections and gable ends in the way察that they formed a series of
clumsy steps察 with no greater obstacle than a jump of some few
feet at last。 Joe察with his stick and bundle on his shoulder察quickly
stood on the firm earth察and looked up at the old Maypole察it might
be for the last time。
He didn¨t apostrophise it察for he was no great scholar。 He didn¨t
curse it察for he had little ill´will to give to anything on earth。 He felt
more affectionate and kind to it than ever he had done in all his

life before察so said with all his heart察 God bless you as a parting
wish察and turned away。
He walked along at a brisk pace察 big with great thoughts of
going for a soldier and dying in some foreign country where it was
very hot and sandy察 and leaving God knows what unheard´of
wealth in prize´money to Dolly察who would be very much affected
when she came to know of it察 and full of such youthful visions察
which were sometimes sanguine and sometimes melancholy察 but
always had her for their main point and centre察 pushed on
vigorously until the noise of London sounded in his ears察and the
Black Lion hove in sight。
It was only eight o¨clock then察 and very much astonished the
Black Lion was察 to see him come walking in with dust upon his
feet at that early hour察 with no grey mare to bear him company。
But as he ordered breakfast to be got ready with all speed察and on
its being set before him gave indisputable tokens of a hearty
appetite察 the Lion received him察 as usual察 with a hospitable
welcome察and treated him with
