with Gashford察 and still Barnaby and his mother followed close
behind them。
They had arrived at the top of a long line of some eight hundred
men in single file察 and Lord George had turned his head to look
back察 when a loud cry of recognition!in that peculiar and half´
stifled tone which a voice has察when it is raised in the open air and
in the midst of a great concourse of persons!was heard察 and a
man stepped with a shout of laughter from the rank察 and smote
Barnaby on the shoulders with his heavy hand。
`How now he cried。 `Barnaby Rudge Why察 where have you
been hiding for these hundred years拭
Barnaby had been thinking within himself that the smell of the
trodden grass brought back his old days at cricket察when he was a
young boy and played on Chigwell Green。 Confused by this
sudden and boisterous address察he stared in a bewildered manner

at the man察and could scarcely say `What Hugh
`Hugh echoed the other察 ay察 Hugh!Maypole Hugh You
remember my dog拭He¨s alive now察and will know you察I warrant。
What察you wear the colour察do you拭Well done Ha ha ha
`You know this young man察I see察 said Lord George。
`Know him察my lord as well as I know my own right hand。 My
captain knows him。 We all know him。¨
`Will you take him into your division拭
`It hasn¨t in it a better察 nor a nimbler察 nor a more active man察
than Barnaby Rudge察 said Hugh。 `Show me the man who says it
has Fall in察 Barnaby。 He shall march察 my lord察 between me and
Dennis察and he shall carry察 he added察taking a flag from the hand
of a tired man who tendered it察 the gayest silken streamer in this
valiant army。¨
`In the name of God察no shrieked the widow察darting forward。
`Barnaby!my lord!see!he¨ll come back!Barnaby!Barnaby
`Women in the field cried Hugh察stepping between them察and
holding her off。 `Holloa My captain there
`What¨s the matter here拭 cried Simon Tappertit察bustling up in
a great heat。 `Do you call this order拭
`Nothing like it察captain察 answered Hugh察still holding her back
with his outstretched hand。 `It¨s against all orders。 Ladies are
carrying off our gallant soldiers from their duty。 The word of
command察captain They¨re filing off the ground。 Quick
`Close cried Simon察with the whole power of his lungs。 `Form
March
She was thrown to the ground察the whole field was in motion察
Barnaby was whirled away into the heart of a dense mass of men察
and she saw him no more。

he mob had been divided from its first assemblage into
four divisions察 the London察 the Westminster察 the
T
Southwark察and the Scotch。 Each of these divisions being
subdivided into various bodies察and these bodies being drawn up
in various forms and figures察the general arrangement was察except
to the few chiefs and leaders察 as unintelligible as the plan of a
great battle to the meanest soldier in the field。 It was not without
its method察however察for察in a very short space of time after being
put in motion察 the crowd had resolved itself into three great
parties察 and were prepared察 as had been arranged察 to cross the
river by different bridges察and make for the House of Commons in
separate detachments。
At the head of that division which had Westminster Bridge for
its approach to the scene of action察Lord George Gordon took his
post察with Gashford at his right hand察and sundry ruffians察of most
unpromising appearance察 forming a kind of staff about him。 The
conduct of a second party察 whose route lay by Blackfriars察 was
entrusted to a committee of management察 including perhaps a
dozen men此 while the third察 which was to go by London Bridge察
and through the main streets察 in order that their numbers and
their serious intentions might be the better known and
appreciated by the citizens察were led by Simon Tappertit assisted
by a few subalterns察 selected from the Brotherhood of United
Bulldogs察Dennis the hangman察Hugh察and some others。
The word of command being given察each of these great bodies
took the road assigned to it察 and departed on its way察 in perfect
order and profound silence。 That which went through the City

greatly exceeded the others in number察 and was of such
prodigious extent that when the rear began to move察the front was
nearly four miles in advance察 notwithstanding that the men
marched three abreast and followed very close upon each other。
At the head of this party察 in the place where Hugh察 in the
madness of his humour察had stationed him察and walking between
that dangerous companion and the hangman察 went Barnaby察 as
many a man among the thousands who looked on that day
afterwards remembered well。 Forgetful of all other things in the
ecstasy of the moment察his face flushed and his eyes sparkling with
delight察heedless of the weight of the great banner he carried察and
mindful only of its flashing in the sun and rustling in the summer
breeze察on he went察proud察happy察elated past all telling此the only
light´hearted察undesigning creature察in the whole assembly。
`What do you think of this拭 asked Hugh察 as they passed
through the crowded streets察and looked up at the windows which
were thronged with spectators。 `They have all turned out to see
our flags and streamers拭 Eh察 Barnaby拭 Why察 Barnaby¨s the
greatest man of all the pack His flag¨s the largest of the lot察 the
brightest too。 There¨s nothing in the show察like Barnaby。 All eyes
are turned on him。 Ha ha ha
