`A man need be brisk to´day察there¨s brisk work a´foot。¨
`There is察 is there拭 said Gashford。 He said it with such a
provoking assumption of ignorance察 that Hugh察 looking over his
shoulder and angrily down upon him察replied此
`Is there You know there is Who knows better than you察
master察that the first great step to be taken is to make examples of
these witnesses察and frighten all men from appearing against us or
any of our body察any more拭
`There¨s one we know of察 returned Gashford察 with an
expressive smile察 who is at least as well informed upon that
subject as you or I。¨
`If we mean the same gentleman察 as I suppose we do察 Hugh
rejoined softly察 I tell you this!he¨s as good and quick information
about everything as!¨ here he paused and looked round察as if to
make sure that the person in question was not within hearing察 as
Old Nick himself。 Have you done that察master拭How slow you are
`It¨s quite fast now察 said Gashford察rising。 `I say!you didn¨t find

that your friend disapproved of to´day¨s little expedition拭 Ha ha
ha It is fortunate it jumps so well with the witness policy察for察once
planned察it must have been carried out。 And now you are going察
eh拭
`Now we are going察master Hugh replied。 `Any parting words拭
`Oh dear察no察 said Gashford sweetly。 `None
`You¨re sure拭 cried Hugh察nudging the grinning Dennis。
`Quite sure察eh察Muster Gashford拭 chuckled the hangman。
Gashford paused a moment察struggling with his caution and his
malice察 then putting himself between the two men察 and laying a
hand upon the arm of each察said察in a cramped whisper此
`Do not察 my good friends!I am sure you will not!forget our
talk one night!in your house察 Dennis!about this person。 No
mercy察no quarter察no two beams of his house to be left standing
where the builder placed them Fire察 the saying goes察 is a good
servant察 but a bad master。 Makes it his master察 he deserves no
better。 But I am sure you will be firm察I am sure you will be very
resolute察 I am sure you will remember that he thirsts for your
lives察 and those of all your brave companions。 If you ever acted
like staunch fellows察 you will do so to´day。 Won¨t you察 Dennis!
won¨t you察Hugh拭
The two looked at him察and at each other察then bursting into a
roar of laughter察brandished their staves above their heads察shook
hands察and hurried out。
When they had been gone a little time察Gashford followed。 They
were yet in sight察and hastening to that part of the adjacent fields
in which their fellows had already mustered察 Hugh was looking
back察and flourishing his hat to Barnaby察who察delighted with his
trust察 replied in the same way察 and then resumed his pacing up

and down before the stable´door察where his feet had worn a path
already。 And when Gashford himself was far distant察 and looked
back for the last time察 he was still walking to and fro察 with the
same measured tread察the most devoted and the blithest champion
that ever maintained a post察 and felt his heart lifted up with a
brave sense of duty察and determination to defend it to the last。
Smiling at the simplicity of the poor idiot察 Gashford betook
himself to Welbeck Street by a different path from that which he
knew the rioters would take察and sitting down behind a curtain in
one of the upper windows of Lord George Gordon¨s house察waited
impatiently for their coming。 They were so long察that although he
knew it had been settled they should come that way察 he had a
misgiving they must have changed their plans and taken some
other route。 But at length the roar of voices was heard in the
neighbouring fields察 and soon afterwards they came thronging
past察in a great body。
However察 they were not all察 nor nearly all察 in one body察 but
were察 as he soon found察 divided into four parties察 each of which
stopped before the house to give three cheers察and then went on察
the leaders crying out in what direction they were going察 and
calling on the spectators to join them。 The first detachment察
carrying察 by way of banners察 some relics of the havoc they had
made in Moorfields察 proclaimed that they were on their way to
Chelsea察whence they would return in the same order察to make of
the spoil they bore察a great bonfire察near at hand。 The second gave
out that they were bound for Wapping察 to destroy a chapel察 the
third察that their place of destination was East Smithfield察and their
object the same。 All this was done in broad察bright察 summer day。
Gay carriages and chairs stopped to let them pass察or turned back

to avoid them察people on foot stood aside in doorways察or perhaps
knocked and begged permission to stand at a window察 or in the
hall察until the rioters had passed此but nobody interfered with them察
and when they had gone by察everything went on as usual。
There still remained the fourth body察and for that the secretary
looked with a most intense eagerness。 At last it came up。 It was
numerous察 and composed of picked men察 for as he gazed down
among them察he recognised many upturned faces which he knew
well!those of Simon Tappertit察Hugh察and Dennis in the front察of
course。 They halted and cheered察 as the others had done察 but
when they moved again察 they did not察 like them察 proclaim what
design they had。 Hugh merely raised his hat upon the bludgeon he
carried察 and glancing at a spectator on the opposite side of the
way察was gone。
