watching them from among the trees察 soon abandoned the idea察
and hastily assembling such men as they found of their mind at
the moment察straggled off。
When he was satisfied that the great mass of the insurgents
were imitating this example察 and that the ground was rapidly
clearing察 he plunged into the thickest portion of the little wood察
and察 crashing the branches as he went察 made straight towards a
distant light此 guided by that察 and by the sullen glow of the fire
behind him。
As he drew nearer and nearer to the twinkling beacon towards
which he bent his course察the red glare of a few torches began to
reveal itself察and the voices of men speaking together in a subdued

tone broke the silence which察save for a distant shouting now and
then察 already prevailed。 At length he cleared the wood察 and察
springing across a ditch察stood in a dark lane察where a small body
of ill´looking vagabonds察 whom he had left there some twenty
minutes before察waited his coming with impatience。
They were gathered round an old post´chaise or chariot察driven
by one of themselves察who sat postilion´wise upon the near horse。
The blinds were drawn up察 and Mr Tappertit and Dennis kept
guard at the two windows。 The former assumed the command of
the party察for he challenged Hugh as he advanced towards them察
and when he did so察those who were resting on the ground about
the carriage rose to their feet and clustered round him。
`Well said Simon察in a low voice察 is all right拭
`Right enough察 replied Hugh察 in the same tone。 `They¨re
dispersing now!had begun before I came away。¨
`And is the coast clear拭
`Clear enough before our men察I take it察 said Hugh。 `There are
not many who察 knowing of their work over yonder察 will want to
meddle with ¨em to´night。!Who¨s got some drink here拭
Everybody had some plunder from the cellar察 half´a´dozen
flasks and bottles were offered directly。 He selected the largest察
and putting it to his mouth察 sent the wine gurgling down his
throat。 Having emptied it察he threw it down察and stretched out his
hand for another察 which he emptied likewise察 at a draught。
Another was given him察 and this he half emptied too。 Reserving
what remained to finish with察he asked此
`Have you got anything to eat察any of you拭I¨m as ravenous as a
hungry wolf。 Which of you was in the larder!come拭
`I was察brother察 said Dennis察pulling off his hat察and fumbling in

the crown。 `There¨s a matter of cold venison pasty somewhere or
another here察if that¨ll do。¨
`Do cried Hugh察seating himself on the pathway。 `Bring it out
Quick Show a light here察and gather round Let me sup in state察
my lads Ha ha ha
Entering into his boisterous humour察 for they all had drunk
deeply察and were as wild as he察they crowded about him察while two
of their number who had torches察held them up察one on either side
of him察that his banquet might not be despatched in the dark。 Mr
Dennis察having by this time succeeded in extricating from his hat a
great mass of pasty察 which had been wedged in so tightly that it
was not easily got out察 put it before him察 and Hugh察 having
borrowed a notched and jagged knife from one of the company察
fell to work upon it vigorously。
`I should recommend you to swallow a little fire every day察
about an hour afore dinner察brother察 said Dennis察after a pause。 `It
seems to agree with you察and to stimulate your appetite。¨
Hugh looked at him察 and at the blackened faces by which he
was surrounded察and察stopping for a moment to flourish his knife
above his head察answered with a roar of laughter。
`Keep order察there察will you拭 said Simon Tappertit。
`Why察 isn¨t a man allowed to regale himself察 noble captain察
retorted his lieutenant察parting the men who stood between them察
with his knife察that he might see him察`to regale himself a little bit
after such work as mine拭 What a hard captain What a strict
captain What a tyrannical captain Ha ha ha
`I wish one of you fellers would hold a bottle to his mouth to
keep him quiet察 said Simon察 unless you want the military to be
down upon us。¨

`And what if they are down upon us retorted Hugh。 `Who
cares拭Who¨s afraid拭Let ¨em come察I say察let ¨em come。 The more察
the merrier。 Give me bold Barnaby at my side察 and we two will
settle the military察 without troubling any of you。 Barnaby¨s the
man for the military。 Barnaby¨s health
But as the majority of those present were by no means anxious
for a second engagement that night察 being already weary and
exhausted察they sided with Mr Tappertit察and pressed him to make
haste with his supper察 for they had already delayed too long。
Knowing察even in the height of his frenzy察that they incurred great
danger by lingering so near the scene of the late outrages察 Hugh
made an end of his meal without more remonstrance察and rising察
stepped up to Mr Tappertit察and smote him on the back。
`Now then察 he cried察 I¨m ready。 There are brave birds inside
this cage察eh拭Delicate birds察tender察loving察little doves。 I caged
¨em!I caged ¨em!one more peep
He thrust the little man aside as he spoke察and mounting on the
steps察 which were half let down察 pulled down the blind by force察
and stared into the chaise like an ogre into his larder。
`Ha ha ha and did you scratch察and pinch察and struggle察pretty
mistress拭 he cried察as he grasped a little hand that sought in vain
to free itself from his grip此 you察so bright´eyed察and cherry´lipped察
and daintily m
