his spirits rose察 and his confidence increased。 When he
remembered the great estimation in which his office was held察and
the constant demand for his services察when he bethought himself察
how the Statute Book regarded him as a kind of Universal
Medicine applicable to men察 women察 and children察 of every age
and variety of criminal constitution察and how high he stood察in his
official capacity察 in the favour of the Crown察 and both Houses of
Parliament察the Mint察the Bank of England察and the Judges of the
land察when he recollected that whatever Ministry was in or out察he
remained their peculiar pet and panacea察 and that for his sake
England stood single and conspicuous among the civilised nations
of the earth此when he called these things to mind and dwelt upon
them察he felt certain that the national gratitude must relieve him
from the consequences of his late proceedings察 and would
certainly restore him to his old place in the happy social system。
With these crumbs察or as one may say察with these whole loaves
of comfort to regale upon察 Mr Dennis took his place among the
escort that awaited him察 and repaired to jail with a manly
indifference。 Arriving at Newgate察where some of the ruined cells
had been hastily fitted up for the safe keeping of rioters察 he was
warmly received by the turnkeys察 as an unusual and interesting
case察 which agreeably relieved their monotonous duties。 In this
spirit察 he was fettered with great care察 and conveyed into the
interior of the prison。
`Brother察 cried the hangman察 as察 following an officer察 he
traversed under these novel circumstances the remains of
passages with which he was well acquainted察 am I going to be
along with anybody拭

was the reply。 `As it is察 we¨re cramped for room察 and you¨ll have
company。¨
`Well察 returned Dennis察 I don¨t object to company察 brother。 I
rather like company。 I was formed for society察I was。¨
`That¨s rather a pity察an¨t it拭 said the man。
`No察 answered Dennis察 I¨m not aware that it is。 Why should it
be a pity察brother拭
`Oh I don¨t know察 said the man carelessly。 `I thought that was
what you meant。 Being formed for society察 and being cut off in
your flower察you know!¨
`I say察 interposed the other quickly察 what are you talking of拭
Don¨t。 Who¨s a´going to be cut off in their flowers拭
`Oh察 nobody particular。 I thought you was察 perhaps察 said the
man。
Mr Dennis wiped his face察which had suddenly grown very hot察
and remarking in a tremulous voice to his conductor that he had
always been fond of his joke察 followed him in silence until he
stopped at a door。
`This is my quarters察is it拭 he asked facetiously。
`This is the shop察sir察 replied his friend。
He was walking in察but not with the best possible grace察when
he suddenly stopped察and started back。
`Halloa said the officer。 `You¨re nervous。¨
`Nervous whispered Dennis in great alarm。 `Well I may be。
Shut the door。¨
`I will察when you¨re in察 returned the man。
`But I can¨t go in there察 whispered Dennis。 `I can¨t be shut up
with that man。 Do you want me to be throttled察brother拭
The officer seemed to entertain no particular desire on the

subject one way or other察 but briefly remarking that he had his
orders察and intended to obey them察pushed him in察turned the key察
and retired。
Dennis stood trembling with his back against the door察 and
involuntarily raising his arm to defend himself察 stared at a man察
the only other tenant of the cell察 who lay察 stretched at his fall
length察upon a stone bench察and who paused in his deep breathing
as if he were about to wake。 But he rolled over on one side察let his
arm fall negligently down察 drew a long sigh察 and murmuring
indistinctly察fell fast asleep again。
Relieved in some degree by this察the hangman took his eyes for
an instant from the slumbering figure察and glanced round the cell
in search of some `vantage´ground or weapon of defence。 There
was nothing moveable within it察 but a clumsy table which could
not be displaced without noise察 and a heavy chair。 Stealing on
tiptoe towards this latter piece of furniture察he retired with it into
the remotest corner察 and intrenching himself behind it察 watched
the enemy with the utmost vigilance and caution。
The sleeping man was Hugh察and perhaps it was not unnatural
for Dennis to feel in a state of very uncomfortable suspense察and to
wish with his whole soul that he might never wake again。 Tired of
standing察 he crouched down in his corner after some time察 and
rested on the cold pavement察but although Hugh¨s breathing still
proclaimed that he was sleeping soundly察 he could not trust him
out of his sight for an instant。 He was so afraid of him察and of some
sudden onslaught察that he was not content to see his closed eyes
through the chair´back察but every now and then察rose stealthily to
his feet察 and peered at him with outstretched neck察 to assure
himself that he really was still asleep察and was not about to spring

upon him when he was off his guard。
He slept so long and so soundly察that Mr Dennis began to think
he might sleep on until the turnkey visited them。 He was
congratulating himself upon these promising appearances察 and
blessing his stars with much fervour察when one or two unpleasant
symptoms manifested themselves此 such as another motion
