sensation of positiveness察and what sort of strength that will give察history

will tell us in the tragedies of the Jews who opposed Titus察of the rabble

who followed Walter the Penniless to the Crusades察 of the Munster

Anabaptists察and many another sad page of human folly。 It may give the

fury of idiots察not the deliberate might of valiant men。 Let us pass this by察

then察 believing that faith can only give strength where it is faith in

something true and right此and go on to another answer almost as popular

as the last。

We are told that the might of Islam lay in a certain innate force and

savage virtue of the Arab character。 If we have discovered this in the

followers of Mohammed察 they certainly had not discovered it in

themselves。 They spoke of themselves察rightly or wrongly察as men who

had received a divine light察and that light a moral light察to teach them to

love that which was good察 and refuse that which was evil察 and to that

divine light they stedfastly and honestly attributed every right action of

their lives。 Most noble and affecting察in my eyes察is that answer of Saad's

aged envoy to Yezdegird察king of Persia察when he reproached him with the

past savagery and poverty of the Arabs。 ;Whatsoever thou hast said察─

answered the old man察 regarding the former condition of the Arabs is true。

Their food was green lizards察they buried their infant daughters alive察nay察

some of them feasted on dead carcases察 and drank blood察 while others

slew their kinsfolk察and thought themselves great and valiant察when by so

doing they became possessed of more property。 They were clothed with

hair garments察 they knew not good from evil察 and made no distinction

between that which was lawful and unlawful。 Such was our state察 but

God in his mercy has sent us察by a holy prophet察a sacred volume察which

teaches us the true faith。;

These words察 I think察 show us the secret of Islam。 They are a just

comment on that short and rugged chapter of the Koran which is said to

have been Mohammed's first attempt either at prophecy or writing察when察

after long fasting and meditation among the desert hills察under the glorious

eastern stars察he came down and told his good Kadijah that he had found a

great thing察and that she must help him to write it down。 And what was

this which seemed to the unlettered camel´driver so priceless a treasure拭

Not merely that God was one Godvast as that discovery wasbut that he

was a God ;who showeth to man the thing which he knew not察─a ;most

merciful God察─a God察in a word察who could be trusted察a God who would

teach and strengthen察a God察as he said察who would give him courage to

set his face like a flint察and would put an answer in his mouth when his

idolatrous countrymen cavilled and sneered at his message to them察to turn

from their idols of wood and stone察 and become righteous men察 as

Abraham their forefather was righteous。

;A God who showeth to man the thing which he knew not。; That

idea gave might to Islam察because it was a real idea察an eternal fact察the

result of a true insight into the character of God。 And that idea alone察

believe me察 will give conquering might either to creed察 philosophy察 or

heart of man。 Each will be strong察each will endure察in proportion as it

believes that God is one who shows to man the thing which he knew not此

as it believes察in short察in that Logos of which Saint John wrote察that He

was the light who lightens every man who comes into the world。

In a word察the wild Koreish had discovered察more or less clearly察that

end and object of all metaphysic whereof I have already spoken so often察

that external and imperishable beauty for which Plato sought of old察and

had seen that its name was righteousness察and that it dwelt absolutely in an

absolutely righteous person察 and moreover察 that this person was no

careless self´contented epicurean deity察but that He was察as they loved to

call Him察the most merciful God察that He cared for men察that He desired to

make men righteous。 Of that they could not doubt。 The fact was

palpable察historic察present。 To them the degraded Koreish of the desert察

who as they believed察and I think believed rightly察had fallen from the old

Monotheism of their forefathers Abraham and Ismael察 into the lowest

fetishism察 and with that into the lowest brutality and wretchednessto

them察 while they were making idols of wood and stone察 eating dead

carcases察and burying their daughters alive察careless of chastity察of justice察

of property察sunk in unnatural crimes察dead in trespasses and sins察hateful

and hating one anothera man察one of their own people had come察saying此

;I have a message from the one righteous God。 His curse is on all this察

for it is unlike Himself。 He will have you righteous men察after the pattern

of your forefather Abraham。 Be that察and arise察body察soul察and spirit察out

of your savagery and brutishness。 Then you shall be able to trample

wild Koreish had in them a reason and a conscience察which could awaken
