called Hella the Flat Rock察 still known as ;Hakon's Hella察─ faint from
loss of blood察and crushed down as he had never before felt。 Having no
son and only one daughter察he appointed these invasive sons of Eric to be
sent for察 and if he died to become king察 but to ;spare his friends and
kindred。; ;If a longer life be granted me察─he said察 I will go out of this
land to Christian men察and do penance for what I have committed against
God。 But if I die in the country of the heathen察let me have such burial as
you yourselves think fittest。; These are his last recorded words。 And in
heathen fashion he was buried察 and besung by Eyvind and the Skalds察
though himself a zealously Christian king。 Hakon the _Good_察so one still
finds him worthy of being called。 The sorrow on Hakon's death察 Snorro
tells us察was so great and universal察 that he was lamented both by friends
and enemies察 and they said that never again would Norway see such a
king。;

CHAPTER IV。
HARALD GREYFELL AND BROTHERS。
Eric's sons察four or five of them察with a Harald at the top察now at once
got Norway in hand察all of it but Trondhjem察as king and under´kings察and
made a severe time of it for those who had been察or seemed to be察their
enemies。 Excellent Jarl Sigurd察always so useful to Hakon and his country察
was killed by them察 and they came to repent that before very long。 The
slain Sigurd left a son察Hakon察as Jarl察who became famous in the northern
world by and by。 This Hakon察 and him only察 would the Trondhjemers
accept as sovereign。 ;Death to him察then察─said the sons of Eric察but only in
secret察till they had got their hands free and were ready察which was not yet
for some years。 Nay察Hakon察when actually attacked察made good resistance察
and threatened to cause trouble。 Nor did he by any means get his death
from these sons of Eric at this time察or till long afterwards at all察from one
of their kin察as it chanced。 On the contrary察he fled to Denmark now察and
by and by managed to come back察to their cost。
Among their other chief victims were two cousins of their own察
Tryggve and Gudrod察who had been honest under´kings to the late head´
king察Hakon the Good察but were now become suspect察and had to fight for
their lives察and lose them in a tragic manner。 Tryggve had a son察whom we
shall hear of。 Gudrod察son of worthy Bjorn the Chapman察was grandfather
of Saint Olaf察 whom all men have heard ofwho has a church in
Southwark even察 and another in Old Jewry察 to this hour。 In all these
violences察Gunhild察widow of the late king Eric察was understood to have a
principal hand。 She had come back to Norway with her sons察and naturally
passed for the secret adviser and Maternal President in whatever of
violence went on察always reckoned a fell察vehement察relentless personage
where her own interests were concerned。 Probably as things settled察 her
influence on affairs grew less。 At least one hopes so察 and察 in the Sagas察
hears less and less of her察and before long nothing。
Harald察 the head´king in this Eric fraternity察 does not seem to have

been a bad manthe contrary indeed察 but his position was untowardly察
full of difficulty and contradictions。 Whatever Harald could accomplish
for behoof of Christianity察 or real benefit to Norway察 in these cross
circumstances察he seems to have done in a modest and honest manner。 He
got the name of _Greyfell_ from his people on a very trivial account察but
seemingly with perfect good humor on their part。 Some Iceland trader had
brought a cargo of furs to Trondhjem Lade for sale察sale being slacker
than the Icelander wished察he presented a chosen specimen察cloak察doublet察
or whatever it was察to Harald察who wore it with acceptance in public察and
rapidly brought disposal of the Icelander's stock察 and the surname of
_Greyfell_ to himself。 His under´kings and he were certainly not popular察
though I almost think Greyfell himself察in absence of his mother and the
under´kings察might have been so。 But here they all were察and had wrought
great trouble in Norway。 ;Too many of them察─said everybody察 too many
of these courts and court people察eating up any substance that there is。; For
the seasons withal察two or three of them in succession察were bad for grass察
much more for grain察 no _herring_ came either察 very cleanness of teeth
was like to come in Eyvind Skaldaspillir's opinion。 This scarcity became at
last their share of the great Famine Of A。D。 975察which desolated Western
Europe see the poem in the Saxon Chronicle。 And all this by Eyvind
Skaldaspillir察and the heathen Norse in general察was ascribed to anger of
the heathen gods。 Discontent in Norway察 and especially in Eyvind
Skaldaspillir察seems to have been very great。
Whereupon exile Hakon察Jarl Sigurd's son察bestirs himself in Denmark察
backed by old King Blue´tooth察and begins invading and encroaching in a
miscellaneous way察 especially intriguing and contriving plots all round
him。 An unfathomably cunning kind of fellow察as well as an audacious and
strong´handed Intriguing in Trondhjem察 where he gets the under´king察
Greyfell's brother察fallen upon and murdered察intriguing with Gold Harald察
a distinguished cousin or nephew of King Blue´tooth's察who had done fine
viking work察and gained察such wealth that he got the epithet of ;Gold察─and
who now was infinitely desirous of a share in Blue´tooth's kingdom as the
proper finish to these sea´rovings。 He even ventured one day to make
publicly a distinct proposal that way to King Harald Blue´tooth himself察

who flew into thunder and lightning at the mere mention of it察so that none
durst speak to him for several days afterwards。 Of both these Haralds
Hakon was confidential friend察 and needed all his skill to walk without
immediate annihilation between such a pair of dragons察 and work out
Norway for himself withal。 In the end
