have taken the resolution察all of us察to fall away from thee察and to take for

ourselves another head察who will so behave that we may enjoy in freedom

the belief which is agreeable to us。 Now shalt thou察king察choose one of

these two courses before the Thing disperse。; ;Whereupon察─ adds the

Chronicle察 all the Bonders raised a mighty shout察'Yes察we will have it so察

as has been said。'; So that Jarl Sigurd had to intervene察and King Hakon to

choose for the moment the milder branch of the alternative。4АAt other

Things Hakon was more or less successful。 All his days察by such methods

as there were察he kept pressing forward with this great enterprise察and on

the whole did thoroughly shake asunder the old edifice of heathendom察

and fairly introduce some foundation for the new and better rule of faith

and life among his people。 Sigurd察Jarl of Lade察his wise counsellor in all

these matters察is also a man worthy of notice。

Hakon's arrangements against the continual invasions of Eric's sons察

with Danish Blue´tooth backing them察were manifold察and for a long time

successful。 He appointed察 after consultation and consent in the various

Things察 so many war´ships察 fully manned and ready察 to be furnished

instantly on the King's demand by each province or fjord察watch´fires察on

fit places察from hill to hill all along the coast察were to be carefully set up察

carefully maintained in readiness察 and kindled on any alarm of war。 By

such methods Blue´tooth and Co。's invasions were for a long while

triumphantly察 and even rapidly察 one and all of them察 beaten back察 till at

length they seemed as if intending to cease altogether察 and leave Hakon

alone of them。 But such was not their issue after all。 The sons of Eric had

only abated under constant discouragement察had not finally left off from

what seemed their one great feasibility in life。 Gunhild察their mother察was

still with them此 a most contriving察 fierce´minded察 irreconcilable woman察

diligent and urgent on them察in season and out of season察and as for King

Blue´tooth察he was at all times ready to help察with his good´will at least。

That of the alarm´fires on Hakon's part was found troublesome by his

people察sometimes it was even hurtful and provoking lighting your alarm´

fires and rousing the whole coast and population察when it was nothing but

some paltry viking with a couple of ships察 in short察 the alarm´signal

system fell into disuse察and good King Hakon himself察in the first place察

paid the penalty。 It is counted察by the latest commentators察to have been

about A。D。 961察 sixteenth or seventeenth year of Hakon's pious察 valiant察

and worthy reign。 Being at a feast one day察 with many guests察 on the

Island of Stord察 sudden announcement came to him that ships from the

south were approaching in quantity察and evidently ships of war。 This was

the biggest of all the Blue´tooth foster´son invasions察and it was fatal to

Hakon the Good that night。 Eyvind the Skaldaspillir annihilator of all

other Skalds察in his famed _Hakon's Song_察gives account察and察still more

pertinently察the always practical Snorro。 Danes in great multitude察 six to

themselves察Hakon察nevertheless察at once deciding not to take to his ships

splendid manner察and at last gloriously prevailing察routing and scattering

back to their ships and flight homeward these six´to´one Danes。 ;During

the struggle of the fight察─says Snorro察 he was very conspicuous among

other men察and while the sun shone察his bright gilded helmet glanced察and

thereby many weapons were directed at him。 One of his henchmen察

Eyvind Finnson _i。e。_ Skaldaspillir察the poet察took a hat察and put it over

the king's helmet。 Now察among the hostile first leaders were two uncles of

the Ericsons察brothers of Gunhild察great champions both察Skreya察the elder

of them察on the disappearance of the glittering helmet察shouted boastfully察

'Does the king of the Norsemen hide himself察then察or has he fled拭Where

now is the golden helmet' And so saying察Skreya察and his brother Alf with

him察pushed on like fools or madmen。 The king said察'Come on in that way察

and you shall find the king of the Norsemen。'; And in a short space of time

braggart Skreya did come up察swinging his sword察and made a cut at the

king察but Thoralf the Strong察an Icelander察who fought at the king's side察

dashed his shield so hard against Skreya察that he tottered with the shock。

On the same instant the king takes his sword ;quernbiter; able to cut

_querns_ or millstones with both hands察and hews Skreya through helm

and head察cleaving him down to the shoulders。 Thoralf also slew Alf。 That

was what they got by such over´hasty search for the king of the

Norsemen。5А

Snorro considers the fall of these two champion uncles as the crisis of

the fight察the Danish force being much disheartened by such a sight察and

King Hakon now pressing on so hard that all men gave way before him察

the battle on the Ericson part became a whirl of recoil察 and in a few

minutes more a torrent of mere flight and haste to get on board their ships察

and put to sea again察in which operation many of them were drowned察says

Snorro察survivors making instant sail for Denmark in that sad condition。

This seems to have been King Hakon's finest battle察 and the most
