LADY FROTH。 More wit than anybody。
BRISK。 I'm everlastingly your humble servant察 deuce take me察
madam。
LORD FROTH。 Don't you think us a happy couple拭
CYNT。 I vow察my lord察I think you the happiest couple in the world察
for you're not only happy in one another察and when you are together察but
happy in yourselves察and by yourselves。
LORD FROTH。 I hope Mellefont will make a good husband too。
CYNT。 'Tis my interest to believe he will察my Lord。
LORD FROTH。 D'ye think he'll love you as well as I do my wife拭
I'm afraid not。
CYNT。 I believe he'll love me better。
LORD FROTH。 Heav'ns that can never be。 But why do you think
so拭
CYNT。 Because he has not so much reason to be fond of himself。
LORD FROTH。 Oh察 your humble servant for that察 dear madam。
Well察Mellefont察you'll be a happy creature。
MEL。 Ay察 my lord察 I shall have the same reason for my happiness

that your lordship has察I shall think myself happy。
LORD FROTH。 Ah察that's all。
BRISK。 To LADY FROTH。А Your ladyship is in the right察 but察
i'gad察 I'm wholly turned into satire。 I confess I write but seldom察 but
when I dokeen iambics察 i'gad。 But my lord was telling me your
ladyship has made an essay toward an heroic poem。
LADY FROTH。 Did my lord tell you拭 Yes察I vow察and the subject
is my lord's love to me。 And what do you think I call it拭 I dare swear
you won't guessTHE SILLABUB察ha察ha察ha。
BRISK。 Because my lord's title's Froth察i'gad察ha察ha察ha察deuce take
me察very e propos and surprising察ha察ha察ha。
LADY FROTH。 He察ay察is not it拭 And then I call my lord Spumoso察
and myself察what d'ye think I call myself拭
BRISK。 Lactilla察may bei'gad察I cannot tell。
LADY FROTH。 Biddy察that's all察just my own name。
BRISK。 Biddy I'gad察 very pretty。 Deuce take me if your
ladyship has not the art of surprising the most naturally in the world。 I
hope you'll make me happy in communicating the poem。
LADY FROTH。 Oh察 you must be my confidant察 I must ask your
advice。
BRISK。 I'm your humble servant察 let me perish。 I presume your
ladyship has read Bossu拭
LADY FROTH。 Oh yes察and Racine察and Dacier upon Aristotle and
Horace。 My lord察you must not be jealous察I'm communicating all to Mr。
Brisk。
LORD FROTH。 No察no察I'll allow Mr。 Brisk察have you nothing about
you to shew him察my dear拭
LADY FROTH。 Yes察I believe I have。 Mr。 Brisk察come察will you go
into the next room拭and there I'll shew you what I have。
LORD FROTH。 I'll walk a turn in the garden察and come to you。
SCENE III。

CYNT。 I'm thinking察though marriage makes man and wife one flesh察
it leaves 'em still two fools察and they become more conspicuous by setting
off one another。
MEL。 That's only when two fools meet察and their follies are opposed。
CYNT。 Nay察I have known two wits meet察and by the opposition of
their wit render themselves as ridiculous as fools。 'Tis an odd game we're
going to play at。 What think you of drawing stakes察and giving over in
time拭
MEL。 No察 hang't察 that's not endeavouring to win察 because it's
possible we may lose察since we have shuffled and cut察let's even turn up
trump now。
CYNT。 Then I find it's like cards察if either of us have a good hand it
is an accident of fortune。
MEL。 No察marriage is rather like a game at bowls此 fortune indeed
makes the match察and the two nearest察and sometimes the two farthest察are
together察but the game depends entirely upon judgment。
CYNT。 Still it is a game察and consequently one of us must be a loser。
MEL。 Not at all察only a friendly trial of skill察and the winnings to be
laid out in an entertainment。 What's here察the music拭 Oh察my lord has
promised the company a new song察we'll get 'em to give it us by the way。
Musicians crossing the stage。А Pray let us have the favour of you察 to
practise the song before the company hear it。
SONG。
I。
Cynthia frowns whene'er I woo her察Yet she's vext if I give over察Much
she fears I should undo her察 But much more to lose her lover此 Thus察 in
doubting察she refuses察And not winning察thus she loses。
II。 Prithee察Cynthia察look behind you察Age and wrinkles will o'ertake
you察Then too late desire will find you察When the power must forsake you此
Think察O think o' th' sad condition察To be past察yet wish fruition。
MEL。 You shall have my thanks below。 To the musicians察 they
go out。А

To themАSIR PAUL PLYANT and LADY PLYANT。
SIR PAUL。 Gadsbud I am provoked into a fermentation察 as my
Lady Froth says察was ever the like read of in story拭
LADY PLYANT。 Sir Paul察have patience察let me alone to rattle him
up。
SIR PAUL。 Pray察 your ladyship察 give me leave to be angry。 I'll
rattle him up察I warrant you察I'll firk him with a CERTIORARI。
LADY PLYANT。 You firk him察I'll firk him myself察pray察Sir Paul察
hold you contented。
CYNT。 Bless me察what makes my father in such a passion拭 I never
saw him thus before。
SIR PAUL。 Hold yourself contented察 my Lady Plyant。 I find
passion coming upon me by inflation察 and I cannot submit as formerly察
therefore give way。
LADY PLYANT。 How now will you be pleased to retire and ´
SIR PAUL。 No察 marry will I not be pleased此I am pleased to be
angry察that's my pleasure at this time。
MEL。 What can this mean拭
LADY PLYANT。 Gads my life察the man's distracted察why察how now察
who are you拭 What am I拭 Slidikins察can't I govern you拭 What did I
marry you for拭 Am I not to be absolute and uncontrollable拭
