get back to the Black Lion察the better察perhaps。¨
Mr Haredale nodded assent察 and drawing his niece¨s arm
through his察and taking one of her hands between his own察passed
out straightway察 followed by the locksmith察 Mrs Varden察 and
Dolly!who would scarcely have presented a sufficient surface for
all the hugs and caresses they bestowed upon her though she had
been a dozen Dollys。 Edward Chester and Joe followed。
And did Dolly never once look behind!not once拭 Was there
not one little fleeting glimpse of the dark eyelash察 almost resting
on her flushed cheek察 and of the downcast sparkling eye it
shaded拭Joe thought there was!and he is not likely to have been
mistaken察 for there were not many eyes like Dolly¨s察 that¨s the
truth。
The outer room through which they had to pass察 was full of
men察among them察Mr Dennis in safe keeping察and there察had been
since yesterday察 lying in hiding behind a wooden screen which
was now thrown down察 Simon Tappertit察 the recreant ¨prentice察
burnt and bruised察and with a gun´shot wound in his body察and his
legs!his perfect legs察the pride and glory of his life察the comfort of
his existence!crushed into shapeless ugliness。 Wondering no
longer at the moans they had heard察 Dolly kept closer to her
father察and shuddered at the sight察but neither bruises察burns察nor
gun´shot wound察 nor all the torture of his shattered limbs察 sent
half so keen a pang to Simon¨s breast察as Dolly passing out察 with
Joe for her preserver。
A coach was ready at the door察and Dolly found herself safe and

whole inside察 between her father and mother察 with Emma
Haredale and her uncle察quite real察sitting opposite。 But there was
no Joe察 no Edward察 and they had said nothing。 They had only
bowed once察and kept at a distance。 Dear heart what a long way it
was to the Black Lion

he Black Lion was so far off察and occupied such a length of
time in the getting at察 that notwithstanding the strong
T
presumptive evidence she had about her of the late events
being real and of actual occurrence察Dolly could not divest herself
of the belief that she must be in a dream which was lasting all
night。 Nor was she quite certain that she saw and heard with her
own proper senses察 even when the coach察 in the fulness of time察
stopped at the Black Lion察and the host of that tavern approached
in a gush of cheerful light to help them to dismount察and give them
hearty welcome。
There too察 at the coach door察 one on one side察 one upon the
other察 were already Edward Chester and Joe Willet察 who must
have followed in another coach此and this was such a strange and
unaccountable proceeding察 that Dolly was the more inclined to
favour the idea of her being fast asleep。 But when Mr Willet
appeared!old John himself!so heavy´headed and obstinate察and
with such a double chin as the liveliest imagination could never in
its boldest flights have conjured up in all its vast proportions!
then she stood corrected察and unwillingly admitted to herself that
she was broad awake。
And Joe had lost an arm!he!that well´made察 handsome察
gallant fellow As Dolly glanced towards him察 and thought of the
pain he must have suffered察and the far´off places in which he had
been wandering察 and wondered who had been his nurse察 and
hoped that whoever it was察she had been as kind and gentle and
considerate as she would have been察the tears came rising to her
bright eyes察one by one察little by little察until she could keep them

back no longer察and so before them all察wept bitterly。
`We are all safe now察 Dolly察 said her father察 kindly。 `We shall
not be separated any more。 Cheer up察my love察cheer up
The locksmith¨s wife knew better perhaps察than he察what ailed
her daughter。 But Mrs Varden being quite an altered woman!for
the riots had done that good!added her word to his察 and
comforted her with similar representations。
`Mayhap察 said Mr Willet察 senior察 looking round upon the
company察 she¨s hungry。 That¨s what it is察 depend upon it!I am察
myself。¨
The Black Lion察 who察 like old John察 had been waiting supper
past all reasonable and conscionable hours察 hailed this as a
philosophical discovery of the profoundest and most penetrating
kind察and the table being already spread察they sat down to supper
straightway。
The conversation was not of the liveliest nature察 nor were the
appetites of some among them very keen。 But察 in both these
respects察old John more than atoned for any deficiency on the part
of the rest察and very much distinguished himself。
It was not in point of actual conversation that Mr Willet shone
so brilliantly察for he had none of his old cronies to `tackle察 and was
rather timorous of venturing on Joe察 having certain vague
misgivings within him察 that he was ready on the shortest notice察
and on receipt of the slightest offence察to fell the Black Lion to the
floor of his own parlour察and immediately to withdraw to China or
some other remote and unknown region察 there to dwell for
evermore察or at least until he had got rid of his remaining arm and
both legs察and perhaps an eye or so察into the bargain。 It was with a
peculiar kind of pantomime that Mr Willet filled up every pause察
