Make my forgiveness downrightsuch as I Should perish if I did not
have from thee察 I let the wrong go察 withered up and dry察 Cursed with
divine forgetfulness in me。 'Tis but self´pity察pleasant察mean察and sly察Low
whispering bids the paltry memory live此What am I brother for察 but to
forgive

;Thou art my father's childcome to my heart此─Thus must I say察 or
Thou must say察 Depart察─Thus I would sayI would be as thou art察Thus I
must say察 or still I work athwart The absolute necessity and law That
dwells in me察and will me asunder draw察If in obedience I leave any flaw。
28。
Lord察I forgiveand step in unto thee。 If I have enemies察Christ deal
with them此 He hath forgiven me and Jerusalem。 Lord察set me from self´
inspiration free察 And let me live and think from thee察 not me Rather察
from deepest me then think and feel察At centre of thought's swift´revolving
wheel。

'Tis but a vision察 Lord察 I do not mean That thus I am察 or have one
moment been 'Tis but a picture hung upon my wall察 To measure dull
contentment therewithal察 And know behind the human how I fall察 A
vision true察of what one day shall be察When thou hast had thy very will

ALAS察 my tent see through it a whirlwind sweep Moaning察 poor
Fancy's doves are swept away。 I sit alone察 a sorrow half asleep察 My
consciousness the blackness all astir。 No pilgrim I察a homeless wanderer
For how canst Thou be in the darkness deep察 Who dwellest only in the
living day拭

It must be察 somewhere in my fluttering tent察 Strange creatures察 half
tamed only yet察 are pent Dragons察 lop´winged birds察 and large´eyed
snakes Hark through the storm the saddest howling breaks Or are they

and scream拭My Morning察rise察and all shall be a dream。

Not thine察my Lord察the darkness all is mine Save that察as mine察my
darkness too is thine此All things are thine to save or to destroy Destroy
my darkness察rise my perfect joy察Love primal察the live coal of every night察
Flame out察 scare the ill things with radiant fright察And fill my tent with
laughing morn's delight。

Master察 thou workest with such common things Low souls察 weak
hearts察 I meanand hast to use察 Therefore察 such common means and
rescuings察That hard we find it察as we sit and muse察To think thou workest
in us verily此Bad sea´boats we察and manned with wretched crews That
doubt the captain察watch the storm´spray flee。

Thou art hampered in thy natural working then When beings designed
on freedom's holy plan Will not be free此with thy poor察foolish men察Thou
therefore hast to work just like a man。 But when察tangling thyself in their
sore need察Thou hast to freedom fashioned them indeed察Then wilt thou
grandly move察and Godlike speed。

Will this not then show grandest fact of all In thy creation victory
most renowned That thou hast wrought thy will by slow and small察And
made men like thee察though thy making bound By that which they were
not察 and could not be Until thou mad'st them make along with thee拭
Master察the tardiness is but in me。
7。
Hence come thy checksbecause I still would run My head into the
sand察 nor flutter aloft Towards thy home察 with thy wind under me。 'Tis
because I am mean察 thy ways so oft Look mean to me察 my rise is low
begun察But scarce thy will doth grasp me察ere I see察For my arrest and rise察
its stern necessity。
8。
Like clogs upon the pinions of thy plan We hanglike captives on thy
chariot´wheels察 Who should climb up and ride with Death's conqueror察
Therefore thy train along the world's highway steals So slow to the peace
of heart´reluctant man。 What shall we do to spread the wing and soar察Nor
straiten thy deliverance any more拭
9。
The sole way to put flight into the wing察To preen its feathers察and to
make them grow察Is to heed humbly every smallest thing With which the
Christ in us has aught to do。 So will the Christ from child to manhood go察
Obedient to the father Christ察and so Sweet holy change will turn all our
old things to new。
10。
Creation thou dost work by faint degrees察By shade and shadow from
unseen beginning察Far察far apart察in unthought mysteries Of thy own dark察
unfathomable seas察 Thou will'st thy will察 and thence察 upon the earth
Slow travelling察 his way through centuries winning A child at length
arrives at never ending birth。
11。
Well mayst thou then work on indocile hearts By small successes察
disappointments small察By nature察weather察failure察or sore fall察By shame察
anxiety察bitterness察and smarts察By loneliness察by weary loss of zest此The

How suddenly some rapid turn of thought May throw the life´machine
all out of gear察Clouding the windows with the steam of doubt察Filling the
eyes with dust察with noise the ear Who knows not then where dwells the
engineer察Rushes aghast into the pathless night察And wanders in a land of
dreary fright。
