man or beast察 In the great hand of God I stand察and thence; Look out on
life察his endless察holy feast。 To try to feel is but to court despair察To dig for
a sun within a garden´fence此Who does thy will察O God察he lives upon thy
air。

The Diary of an Old Soul
AUGUST。
1。
SO shall abundant entrance me be given Into the truth察 my life's
inheritance。 Lo as the sun shoots straight from out his tomb察God´floated察
casting round a lordly glance Into the corners of his endless room察 So察
through the rent which thou察O Christ察hast riven察I enter liberty's divine
expanse。
2。
It will be soah察so it is not now Who seeks thee for a little lazy peace察
Then察like a man all weary of the plough察That leaves it standing in the
furrow's crease察Turns from thy presence for a foolish while察Till comes
again the rasp of unrest's file察 From liberty is distant many a mile。
3。
Like one that stops察and drinks察and turns察and goes Into a land where
never water flows察There travels on察the dry and thirsty day察Until the hot
night veils the farther way察Then turns and finds again the bubbling pool
Here would I build my house察take up my stay察Nor ever leave my Sychar's
margin cool。
4。
Keep me察Lord察with thee。 I call from out the dark Hear in thy light察
of which I am a spark。 I know not what is mine and what is thine Of
branch and stem I miss the differing mark But if a mere hair's´breadth
me separateth察 That hair's´breadth is eternal察 infinite death。 For sap thy
dead branch calls察O living vine
5。
I have no choice察 I must do what I can察 But thou dost me察 and all
things else as well察Thou wilt take care thy child shall grow a man。 Rouse
thee察my faith察be king察with life be one察To trust in God is action's highest
kind察Who trusts in God察his heart with life doth swell察Faith opens all the
windows to God's wind。
6。
O Father察thou art my eternity。 Not on the clasp Of consciousnesson

thee My life depends察 and I can well afford All to forget察 so thou
remember察Lord。 In thee I rest察in sleep thou dost me fold察In thee I labour察
still in thee察grow old察And dying察shall I not in thee察my Life察be bold拭
7。
In holy things may be unholy greed。 Thou giv'st a glimpse of many a
lovely thing察Not to be stored for use in any mind察But only for the present
spiritual need。 The holiest bread察 if hoarded察 soon will breed The
mammon´moth察the having´pride察I find。 'Tis momently thy heart gives out
heart´quickening。
8。
It is thyself察 and neither this nor that察 Nor anything察 told察 taught察 or
dreamed of thee察That keeps us live。 The holy maid who sat Low at thy
feet察choosing the better part察Rising察bore with herwhat a memory Yet察
brooding only on that treasure察 she Had soon been roused by conscious
loss of heart。
9。
I am a fool when I would stop and think察And lest I lose my thoughts察
from duty shrink。 It is but avarice in another shape。 'Tis as the vine´branch
were to hoard the grape察Nor trust the living root beneath the sod。 What
trouble is that child to thee察my God察Who sips thy gracious cup察and will
not drink
10。
True察faithful action only is the life察The grapes for which we feel the
pruning knife。 Thoughts are but leaves察they fall and feed the ground。 The
holy seasons察 swift and slow察 go round察 The ministering leaves return察
fresh察 large察 and rife But fresher察 larger察 more thoughts to the brain此
Farewell察my dovecome back察hope´laden察through the rain。
11。
Well may this body poorer察feebler grow It is undressing for its last
sweet bed察 But why should the soul察 which death shall never know察
Authority察and power察and memory shed拭It is that love with absolute faith
would wed察God takes the inmost garments off his child察To have him in
his arms察naked and undefiled。
12。

Thou art my knowledge and my memory察No less than my real察deeper
life察 my love。 I will not fool察 degrade myself to trust In less than that
which maketh me say Me察In less than that causing itself to be。 Then art
within me察 behind察 beneath察 above I will be thine because I may and
must。
13。
Thou art the truth察the life。 Thou察Lord察wilt see To every question that
perplexes me。 I am thy being察 and my dignity Is written with my name
down in thy book察Thou wilt care for it。 Never shall I think Of anything
that thou mightst overlook此In faith´born triumph at thy feet I sink。
14。
Thou carest more for that which I call mine察 In same sortbetter
manner than I could察Even if I knew creation's ends divine察Rousing in me
this vague desire of good。 Thou art more to me than my desires' whole
brood察Thou art the only person察and I cry Unto the father I of this my I。
15。
Thou who inspirest prayer察then bend'st thine ear察It察crying with love's
grand respect to hear I cannot give myself to thee aright With the
triumphant uttermost of gift察 That cannot be till I am full of light To
perfect deed a perfect will must lift此Inspire察possess察compel me察first of
every might。
16。
I do not wonder men can ill believe Who make poor claims upon thee察
perfect Lord察Then most I trust when most I would receive。 I wonder not
that such do pray and grieve The God they think察to be God is not fit。
Then only in thy glory I seem to sit察When my heart claims from thine an
infinite accord。
17。
More life I need ere I myself can be。 Sometimes察when the eternal tide
ebbs low察A moment weary of my life I grow Weary of my existence' self察
I mean察 Not of its plodding察 not its wind and snow Then to thy knee
trusting I turn察and lean此Thou will'st I live察and I do will with thee。
18。
Dost thou mean sometimes that we should forget thee察Dropping the
