garment drips and flows。 Ere long I shall be safe in upper air察With thee察

my lifewith thee察my answered prayer Where thou art God in every wind

that blows察 And self alone察 and ever察 softly dies察 There shall my being

blossom察and I know it fair。

in the firmament divine。

     25。

Lord察loosen in me the hold of visible things察Help me to walk by faith

and not by sight察I would察through thickest veils and coverings察See into

the chambers of the living light。 Lord察in the land of things that swell and

seem察Help me to walk by the other light supreme察Which shows thy facts

behind man's vaguely hinting dream。

     26。

I see a little child whose eager hands Search the thick stream that

drains the crowded street For possible things hid in its current slow。 Near

by察behind him察a great palace stands察Where kings might welcome nobles

to their feet。 Soft sounds察sweet scents察fair sights there only go There the

child's father lives察but the child does not know。

     27。

     On察eager察hungry察busy´seeking child察Rise up察turn round察run in察run

pondering how thou dost fare。 The mighty man will clasp thee to his breast此

Will kiss thee察stroke the tangles of thy hair察And lap thee warm in fold on

fold of lovely rest。

The prince of this world came察and nothing found In thee察O master察

In my own heart察O master察in my thought察Betwixt the woolly sheep

     30。

The enemy still hath many things in me察Yea察many an evil nest with

                                  OCTOBER。

     1。

REMEMBER察Lord察thou hast not made me good。 Or if thou didst察it

was so long ago I have forgottenand never understood察I humbly think。

At best it was a crude察A rough´hewn goodness察 that did need this woe察

This sin察these harms of all kinds fierce and rude察To shape it out察making

it live and grow。

     2。

But thou art making me察I thank thee察sire。 What thou hast done and

doest thou know'st well察And I will help theegently in thy fire I will lie

burning察on thy potter's´wheel I will whirl patient察though my brain should

reel察Thy grace shall be enough the grief to quell察And growing strength

perfect through weakness dire。

     3。

     I have not knowledge察wisdom察insight察thought察Nor understanding察fit

to justify Thee in thy work察O Perfect。 Thou hast brought Me up to this

and察lo what thou hast wrought察I cannot call it good。 But I can cry ;O

enemy察the maker hath not done察One day thou shalt behold察and from the

sight wilt run。;

     4。

The faith I will察 aside is easily bent察 But of thy love察 my God察 one

glimpse alone Can make me absolutely confident With faith察hope察joy察

in love responsive blent。 My soul then察 in the vision mighty grown察 Its

father and its fate securely known察Falls on thy bosom with exultant moan。

     5。

Thou workest perfectly。 And if it seem Some things are not so well察'tis

but because They are too loving´deep察too lofty´wise察For me察poor child察

to understand their laws此My highest wisdom half is but a dream察My love

runs helpless like a falling stream此 Thy good embraces ill察 and lo its

illness dies

sudden glorious glee拭Why burst not gracious on me heaven and earth In

all the splendour of a new´day´birth拭Why hangs a cloud betwixt my lord

and me拭 The moment that my eyes the morning greet察 My soul should

panting rush to clasp thy father´feet。

     7。

Is it because it is not thou I see察But only my poor察blotted fancy of

thee拭Oh never till thyself reveal thy face察Shall I be flooded with life's

vital grace。 Oh make my mirror´heart thy shining´place察And then my soul察

awaking with the morn察Shall be a waking joy察eternally new´born。

     8。

Lord察in my silver is much metal base察Else should my being by this

time have shown Thee thy own self therein。 Therefore do I Wake in the

furnace。 I know thou sittest by察Refininglook察keep looking in to try Thy

silver察master察look and see thy face察Else here I lie for ever察blank as any

stone。

     9。

But when in the dim silver thou dost look察I do behold thy face察though

blurred and faint。 Oh joy no flaw in me thy grace will brook察 But still

refine此slow shall the silver pass 〃From bright to brighter察till察sans spot or

taint察Love察well content察shall see no speck of brass察And I his perfect face

shall hold as in a glass。

     10。

With every morn my life afresh must break The crust of self察gathered

about me fresh察That thy wind´spirit may rush in and shake The darkness

out of me察 and rend the mesh The spider´devils spin out of the flesh

Eager to net the soul before it wake察That it may slumberous lie察and listen

to the snake。

'Tis that I am not goodthat is enough察I pry no fartherthat is not the

way。 Here察 O my potter察 is thy making stuff
