'Tis that I am not goodthat is enough察I pry no fartherthat is not the
way。 Here察 O my potter察 is thy making stuff Set thy wheel going察let it
whir and play。 The chips in me察the stones察the straws察the sand察Cast them
out with fine separating hand察And make a vessel of thy yielding clay。
12。
What if it take a thousand years to make me察So me he leave not察angry察

on the floor Nay察thou art never angrythat would break me Would I
tried never thy dear patience sore察But were as good as thou couldst well
expect me察Whilst thou dost make察I mar察and thou correct me Then were
I now content察waiting for something more。
13。
Only察my God察see thou that I content thee Oh察take thy own content
upon me察God Ah察never察never察sure察wilt thou repent thee察That thou hast
called thy Adam from the clod Yet must I mourn that thou shouldst ever
find me One moment sluggish察needing more of the rod Than thou didst
think when thy desire designed me。
14。
My God察it troubles me I am not better。 More help察I pray察still more。
Thy perfect debtor I shall be when thy perfect child I am grown。 My
Father察help meam I not thine own拭Lo察other lords have had dominion
o'er me察But now thy will alone I set before me此Thy own heart's lifeLord察
thou wilt not abhor me
15。
In youth察when once again I had set out To find thee察Lord察my life察my
liberty察A window now and then察clouds all about察Would open into heaven此
my heart forlorn First all would tremble with a solemn glee察 Then察
whelmed in peace察rest like a man outworn察That sees the dawn slow part
the closed lids of the morn。
16。
Now I grow old察and the soft´gathered years Have calmed察yea dulled
the heart's swift fluttering beat察But a quiet hope that keeps its household
seat Is better than recurrent glories fleet。 To know thee察Lord察is worth a
many tears察And when this mildew察 age察 has dried away察 My heart will
beat again as young and strong and gay。
17。
Stronger and gayer tenfoldbut察 O friends察 Not for itself察 nor any
hoarded bliss。 I see but vaguely whither my being tends察All vaguely spy a
glory shadow´blent察Vaguely desire the ;individual kiss察─But when I think
of God察a large content Fills the dull air of my gray cloudy tent。
18。

Father of me察thou art my bliss secure。 Make of me察maker察whatsoe'er
thou wilt。 Let fancy's wings hang moulting察hope grow poor察And doubt
steam up from where a joy was spilt I lose no time to reason it plain and
clear察 But fly to thee察 my life's perfection dear此 Not what I think察 but
what thou art察makes sure。
19。
This utterance of spirit through still thought察 This forming of heart´
stuff in moulds of brain察Is helpful to the soul by which 'tis wrought察The
shape reacting on the heart again察But when I am quite old察and words are
slow察 Like dying things that keep their holes for woe察 And memory's
withering tendrils clasp with effort vain拭
20。
Thou察then as now察no less wilt be my life察And I shall know it better
than before察 Praying and trusting察 hoping察 claiming more。 〃From effort
vain察sick foil察and bootless strife察I shall察with childness fresh察look up to
thee察Thou察 seeing thy child with age encumbered sore察Wilt round him
bend thine arm more carefully。
21。
And when grim Death doth take me by the throat察Thou wilt have pity
on thy handiwork察Thou wilt not let him on my suffering gloat察But draw
my soul outgladder than man or boy察When thy saved creatures from the
narrow ark Rushed out察and leaped and laughed and cried for joy察And the
great rainbow strode across the dark。
22。
Against my fears察my doubts察my ignorance察I trust in thee察O father of
my Lord The world went on in this same broken dance察When察worn and
mocked察he trusted and adored此I too will trust察and gather my poor best To
face the truth´faced false。 So in his nest I shall awake at length察 a little
scarred and scored。
23。
Things cannot look all right so long as I Am not all right who see
therefore not right Can see。 The lamp within sends out the light Which
shows the things察and if its rays go wry察Or are not white察they must part
show a lie。 The man察half´cured察did men not trees conclude察Because he

moving saw what else had seemed a wood。
24。
Give me察take from me察as thou wilt。 I learn Slowly and stubbornly I
learn to yield With a strange hopefulness。 As from the field Of hard´fought
battle won察the victor chief Turns thankfully察although his heart do yearn察
So from my old things to thy new I turn察With sad察thee´trusting heart察and
not in grief。
25。
If with my father I did wander free察Floating o'er hill and field where'er
we would察 And察 lighting on the sward before the door察 Strange faces
through the window´panes should see察And strange feet standing where the
loved had stood察The dear old place theirs all察as ours before Should I be
sorrowful察father察having thee拭
26。
So察 Lord察 if thou tak'st from me all the rest察 Thyself with each
resumption drawing nigher察It shall but hurt me as the thorn of the briar察
When I reach to the pale flower in its breast。 To have thee察Lord察is to have
all thy best察Holding it by its very life divine To let my friend's hand go察
and take his heart in mine。
27。
Take from me leisure察all familiar places察Take all the lovely things of
earth and air Take from me books察take all my precious faces察Take words
melodious察and their songful linking察Take scents察and sounds察and all thy
outsides fair察Draw nearer察taking察and察to my sober thinking察Thou bring'st
them nearer all察and ready to my prayer。
28。
No place on earth henceforth I shall count strange察 For every place
belongeth to my Christ。 I will go calm where'er thou bid'st me range察
Whoe'er my neighbour察thou art still my nighest。 Oh my heart's life察my
owner察will of my being Into my soul thou every moment diest察In thee
my life thus evermore decreeing。
29。
What though things change and pass察nor come again Th
