neither fly nor run。 I cannot feel as thou and I both would察But察Father察I
am willingmake me good。 What art thou father for察but to help thy son拭
Look deep察yet deeper察in my heart察and there察Beyond where I can feel察
read thou the prayer。
16。
Oh what it were to be right sure of thee Sure that thou art察 and the
same as thy son察Jesus Oh察faith is deeper察wider than the sea察Yea察than
the blue of heaven that ever flees us Yet simple as the cry of sore´hurt
child察Or as his shout察with sudden gladness wild察When home from school
he runs察till morn set free。
17。
If I were sure thou察Father察verily art察True father of the Nazarene as
true察Sure as I am of my wife's shielding heart察Sure as of sunrise in the

watching blue察Sure as I am that I do eat and drink察And have a heart to
love and laugh and think察Meseems in flame the joy might from my body
start。
18。
But I must know thee in a deeper way Than any of these ways察 or
know thee not察 My heart at peace far loftier proof must lay Than if the
wind thou me the wave didst roll察Than if I lay before thee a sunny spot察
Or knew thee as the body knows its soul察Or even as the part doth know its
perfect whole。
19。
There is no word to tell how I must know thee察No wind clasped ever a
low meadow´flower So close that as to nearness it could show thee察No
rainbow so makes one the sun and shower。 A something with thee察I am a
nothing fro' thee。 Because I am not save as I am in thee察My soul is ever
setting out to win thee。
20。
I know not howfor that I first must know thee。 I know I know thee
not as I would know thee察For my heart burns like theirs that did not know
him察Till he broke bread察and therein they must know him。 I know thee察
knowing that I do not know thee察Nor ever shall till one with me I know
thee Even as thy son察the eternal man察doth know thee。
21。
Creation under me察 in察 and above察 Slopes upward from the base察 a
pyramid察On whose point I shall stand at last察and love。 〃From the first
rush of vapour at thy will察To the last poet´word that darkness chid察Thou
hast been sending up creation's hill察 To lift thy souls aloft in faithful
Godhead free。
22。
I think my thought察and fancy I think thee。 Lord察wake me up察rend
swift my coffin´planks察I pray thee察let me livealive and free。 My soul
will break forth in melodious thanks察Aware at last what thou wouldst have
it be察 When thy life shall be light in me察 and when My life to thine is
answer and amen。
23。

How oft I say the same things in these lines Even as a man察buried in
during dark察 Turns ever where the edge of twilight shines察 Prays ever
towards the vague eternal mark察 Or as the sleeper察 having dreamed he
drinks察Back straightway into thirstful dreaming sinks察So turns my will to
thee察for thee still longs察still pines。
24。
The mortal man察 all careful察 wise察 and troubled察The eternal child in
the nursery doth keep。 To´morrow on to´day the man heaps doubled察The
child laughs察 hopeful察 even in his sleep。 The man rebukes the child for
foolish trust察The child replies察 Thy care is for poor dust察Be still察and let
me wake that thou mayst sleep。;
25。
Till I am one察with oneness manifold察I must breed contradiction察strife察
and doubt察 Things tread Thy courtlook realtake proving hold My
Christ is not yet grown to cast them out察Alas to me察false´judging 'twixt
the twain察The Unseen oft fancy seems察 while察 all about察The Seen doth
lord it with a mighty train。
26。
But when the Will hath learned obedience royal察He straight will set
the child upon the throne察To whom the seen things all察grown instant loyal察
Will gather to his feet察in homage prone The child their master they have
ever known察Then shall the visible fabric plainly lean On a Reality that
never can be seen。
27。
Thy ways are wonderful察maker of men Thou gavest me a child察and I
have fed And clothed and loved her察 many a growing year察 Lo now a
friend of months draws gently near察And claims her futureall beyond his
ken There he hath never loved her nor hath led此She weeps and moans察
but turns察and leaves her home so dear。
28。
She leaves察but not forsakes。 Oft in the night察Oft at mid´day when all
is still around察 Sudden will rise察 in dim pathetic light察 Some childish
memory of household bliss察 Or sorrow by love's service robed and
crowned察 Rich in his love察 she yet will sometimes miss The mother's

folding arms察the mother's sealing kiss。
29。
Then first察I think察our eldest´born察although Loving察devoted察tender察
watchful察dear察The innermost of home´bred love shall know Yea察when at
last the janitor draws near察A still察pale joy will through the darkness go察At
thought of lying in those arms again察Which once were heaven enough for
any pain。
30。
By love doth love grow mighty in its love此 Once thou shalt love us察
child察as we love thee。 Father of loves察 is it not thy decree That察by our
long察 far´wandering remove 〃From thee察 our life察 our home察 our being
blest察We learn at last to love thee true and best察And rush with all our
loves back to thy infinite rest拭

DECEMBER。
1。
I AM a little weary of my life Not thy life察 blessed Father Or the
blood Too slowly laves the coral shores of thought察 Or I am weary of
weariness and strife。 Open my soul´gates to thy living flood察 I ask not
larger heart´throbs察 vigour´fraught察 I pray thy presence察 with strong
patience rife。
2。
I will what thou will'stonly keep me sure That thou art willing察call to
me now and then。 So察 ceasing to enjoy察 I shall endure With perfect
patiencewilling beyond my ken
