What though things change and pass察nor come again Thou察the life´
heart of all things察changest never。 The sun shines on察the fair clouds turn

to rain察And glad the earth with many a spring and river。 The hearts that
answer change with chill and shiver察That mourn the past察sad´sick察with
hopeless pain察They know not thee察our changeless heart and brain。
30。
My halting words will some day turn to song Some far´off day察 in
holy other times The melody now prisoned in my rimes Will one day
break aloft察and from the throng Of wrestling thoughts and words spring
up the air察As from the flower its colour's sweet despair Issues in odour察
and the sky's low levels climbs。
31。
My surgent thought shoots lark´like up to thee。 Thou like the heaven
art all about the lark。 Whatever I surmise or know in me察 Idea察 or but
symbol on the dark察Is living察working察thought´creating power In thee察the
timeless father of the hour。 I am thy book察thy songthy child would be。

1。
THOU art of this world察Christ。 Thou know'st it all察Thou know'st our
evens察our morns察our red and gray察How moons察and hearts察and seasons
rise and fall察How we grow weary plodding on the way察Of future joy how
present pain bereaves察 Rounding us with a dark of mere decay察 Tossed
with a drift Of summer´fallen leaves。
2。
Thou knowest all our weeping察 fainting察 striving察Thou know'st how
very hard it is to be察How hard to rouse faint will not yet reviving察To do
the pure thing察trusting all to thee察To hold thou art there察for all no face we
see察How hard to think察through cold and dark and dearth察That thou art
nearer now than when eye´seen on earth。
3。
Have pity on us for the look of things察When blank denial stares us in
the face。 Although the serpent mask have lied before察It fascinates the bird
that darkling sings察And numbs the little prayer´bird's beating wings。 For
how believe thee somewhere in blank space察If through the darkness come
no knocking to our door拭
4。
If we might sit until the darkness go察 Possess our souls in patience
perhaps we might察But there is always something to be done察And no heart
left to do it。 To and fro The dull thought surges察as the driven waves fight
In gulfy channels。 Oh victorious one察Give strength to rise察go out察and
meet thee in the night。
5。
;Wake察thou that sleepest察rise up from the dead察And Christ will give
thee light。; I do not know What sleep is察what is death察or what is light察
But I am waked enough to feel a woe察To rise and leave death。 Stumbling
through the night察To my dim lattice察O calling Christ I go察And out into
the dark look for thy star´crowned head。

There are who come to me察and write察and send察Whom I would love察
giving good things to all察But friendthat name I cannot on them spend察
'Tis from the centre of self´love they call For cherishingfor which they
first must know How to be still察and take the seat that's low此When察Lord察
shall I be fitwhen wilt thou call me friend拭
7。
Wilt thou not one day察Lord拭In all my wrong察Self´love and weakness察
laziness and fear察This one thing I can say此I am content To be and have
what in thy heart I am meant To be and have。 In my best times I long After
thy will察and think it glorious´dear察Even in my worst察perforce my will to
thine is bent。
8。
My God察I look to thee for tenderness Such as I could not seek from
any man察Or in a human heart fancy or plan A something deepest prayer
will not express此 Lord察 with thy breath blow on my being's fires察 Until察
even to the soul with self´love wan察I yield the primal love察that no return
desires。
9。
Only no word of mine must ever foster The self that in a brother's
bosom gnaws察I may not fondle failing察nor the boaster Encourage with the
breath of my applause。 Weakness needs pity察 sometimes love's rebuke察
Strength only sympathy deserves and draws And grows by every faithful
loving look。
10。
'Tis but as men draw nigh to thee察my Lord察They can draw nigh each
other and not hurt。 Who with the gospel of thy peace are girt察 The belt
from which doth hang the Spirit's sword察Shall breathe on dead bones察and
the bones shall live察Sweet poison to the evil self shall give察And察 clean
themselves察lift men clean from the mire abhorred。
11。
My Lord察I have no clothes to come to thee察My shoes are pierced and
broken with the road察I am torn and weathered察wounded with the goad察
And soiled with tugging at my weary load此The more I need thee A very
prodigal I stagger into thy presence察Lord of me此One look察my Christ察and

at thy feet I fall
12。
Why should I still hang back察like one in a dream察Who vainly strives
to clothe himself aright察That in great presence he may seemly seem拭Why
call up feelingdress me in the faint察 Worn察 faded察 cast´off nimbus of
some saint拭Why of old mood bring back a ghostly gleam While there
He waits察love's heart and loss's blight
13。
Son of the Father察 elder brother mine察 See thy poor brother's plight察
See how he stands Defiled and feeble察hanging down his hands Make me
clean察 brother察 with thy burning shine察 From thy rich treasures察
householder divine察 Bring forth fair garments察 old and new察 I pray察And
like thy brother dress me察in the old home´bred way。
14。
My prayer´bird was coldwould not away察Although I set it on the
edge of the nest。 Then I bethought me of the story old Love´fact or
loving fable察 thou know'st best How察 when the children had made
sparrows of clay察Thou mad'st them birds察with wings to flutter and fold此
Take察Lord察my prayer in thy hand察and make it pray。
15。
My poor clay´sparrow seems turned to a stone察And from my heart will
neither fly nor run。 I cannot feel as thou and I both would察But察Father察I
am willingmak
