No sickness can come near to blast my health察 My life depends not

deceit察 Thou art my life察 my health察 my bank察 my barn And from all
other gods thou plain dost warn。
18。
Care thou for mine whom I must leave behind察Care that they know
who 'tis for them takes care察Thy present patience help them still to bear察
Lord察keep them clearing察growing察heart and mind察In one thy oneness us
together bind察Last earthly prayer with which to thee I cling Grant that察
save love察we owe not anything。
19。
'Tis well察 for unembodied thought a live察 True house to buildof
stubble察 wood察 nor hay察 So察 like bees round the flower by which they
thrive察My thoughts are busy with the informing truth察And as I build察 I
feed察 and grow in youth Hoping to stand fresh察 clean察 and strong察 and
gay察When up the east comes dawning His great day。
20。
Thy will is truth'tis therefore fate察the strong。 Would that my will did
sweep full swing with thine Then harmony with every spheric song察And
conscious power察 would give sureness divine。 Who thinks to thread thy
great laws' onward throng察Is as a fly that creeps his foolish way Athwart
an engine's wheels in smooth resistless play。
21。
Thou in my heart hast planted察gardener divine察A scion of the tree of
life此it grows察But not in every wind or weather it blows察The leaves fall
sometimes from the baby tree察And the life´power seems melting into pine察
Yet still the sap keeps struggling to the shine察And the unseen root clings
cramplike unto thee。
22。
Do thou察my God察my spirit's weather control察And as I do not gloom
though the day be dun察 Let me not gloom when earth´born vapours roll
Across the infinite zenith of my soul。 Should sudden brain´frost through
the heart's summer run察Cold察weary察joyless察waste of air and sun察Thou
art my south察my summer´wind察my all察my one。

haunted body察sore´dismayed mind察Is but the egg that rounds the winged
faith察When that its path into the air shall find察My heart will follow察high
above cold察rain察and wind。
24。
I can no more than lift my weary eyes察Therefore I lift my weary eyes´
´no more。 But my eyes pull my heart察 and that察 before 'Tis well awake察
knocks where the conscience lies察 Conscience runs quick to the spirit's
hidden door此 Straightway察from every sky´ward window察 cries Up to the
Father's listening ears arise。
25。
Not in my fancy now I search to find thee察 Not in its loftiest forms
would shape or bind thee察I cry to one whom I can never know察Filling me
with an infinite overflow察 Not to a shape that dwells within my heart察
Clothed in perfections love and truth assigned thee察But to the God thou
knowest that thou art。
26。
Not察Lord察because I have done well or ill察Not that my mind looks up
to thee clear´eyed察Not that it struggles in fast cerements tied察Not that I
need thee daily sorer still察Not that I wretched察wander from thy will察Not
now for any cause to thee I cry察But this察that thou art thou察and here am I。
27。
Yestereve察 Death came察 and knocked at my thin door。 I from my
window looked此the thing I saw察The shape uncouth察I had not seen before。
I was disturbedwith fear察in sooth察not awe察Whereof ashamed察I instantly
did rouse My will to seek theeonly to fear the more此Alas I could not
find thee in the house。
28。
I was like Peter when he began to sink。 To thee a new prayer therefore
I have got That察when Death comes in earnest to my door察Thou wouldst
thyself go察when the latch doth clink察And lead him to my room察up to my
cot察Then hold thy child's hand察 hold and leave him not察Till Death has
done with him for evermore。

Till Death has done with himAh察 leave me then And Death has
done with me察 oh察 nevermore He comesand goesto leave me in thy
arms察 Nearer thy heart察 oh察 nearer than before To lay thy child察 naked察
new´born again Of mother earth察crept free through many harms察Upon thy
bosomstill to the very core。
30。 Come to me察Lord此I will not speculate how察Nor think at which
door I would have thee appear察Nor put off calling till my floors be swept察
But cry察 Come察 Lord察 come any way察 come now。; Doors察 windows察 I
throw wide察my head I bow察And sit like some one who so long has slept
That he knows nothing till his life draw near。
31。
O Lord察 I have been talking to the people察 Thought's wheels have
round me whirled a fiery zone察And the recoil of my words' airy ripple My
heart unheedful has puffed up and blown。 Therefore I cast myself before
thee prone此 Lay cool hands on my burning brain察 and press 〃From my
weak heart the swelling emptiness。

FEBRUARY。
1。
I TO myself have neither power nor worth察 Patience nor love察 nor
anything right good察 My soul is a poor land察 plenteous in dearth Here
blades of grass察 there a small herb for food A nothing that would be
something if it could察But if obedience察Lord察in me do grow察I shall one
day be better than I know。
2。
The worst power of an evil mood is this It makes the bastard self
seem in the right察 Self察 self the end察 the goal of human bliss。 But if the
Christ´self in us be the might Of saving God察why should I spend my force
With a dark thing to reason of the light Not push it rough aside察and hold
obedient course拭

Back still it comes to this此there was a man Who said察 I am t
